Hi, all! Believe it or not, I'm still here! I have been unbelievably busy with nursing school. Pretty much, when I'm not studying, I'm too busy relaxing to blog. I miss you guys though! School has been pretty eventful, and I have a lot to tell you about, but it unfortunately won't be tonight. I have way too much studying to do. I have my next big exam on Friday--the 3rd one so far. I can't even believe that the semester is like half over already. I will be finished with school before I know it! I can't believe it has gone so quickly. I also can't believe how long it's been since I last blogged. If anyone actually enjoys reading my posts, then you have my utmost apologies for not posting! I am going to try to start back with atleast once a week. There may be more narrative than craft, but I will try to share some projects I'm working on, too.

I hope everyone is doing well! I promise to check in with more soon! (I will tell you all about my first time giving an injection, which was today, and was so great! There were no tears shed by me or my patient, so I think that was a success!...Maybe because I didn't tell her I was an injection virgin;) haha!)

1. Do you like seafood?
I don't really like seafood that much. I like fried fish and popcorn shrimp. Basically, I like fish that doesn't taste like fish.

2. Are mermaids hot?
I think, in real life, mermaids would be super creepy, so no. I don't think mermaids are hot.

3. Have you swam in the ocean?
Swam? Is that correct? Swum? Yea, I guess it's swam. Yes, I love swimming in the ocean! The beach is my favorite place to vacation.

4. If you got stung by a jellyfish, would you let a stranger pee on you?
I wouldn't be at the beach alone. If I was, I doubt I could talk a stranger into peeing on me anyway. But yea, if I was in pain, go for it. Still gross.

5. Have you ever pee'd in the ocean?
Yes I have. Many times. The lake, too.

6. Can you make a cute fish face? (Show a pic..if you want)
Of course!

7. When you see the lobster tank at the grocery store do you just have this overwhelming urge to set them free or cook them up?
Neither. I like to tap on the glass though, which they never seem to notice.

8. Are you afraid of sharks?
Definitely. I'm afraid of anything lurking under the water that I can't see and that might want to bite me.

Week 3: Day 1

Onto my 3rd week of nursing school. I can honestly say that I am loving it, but the panic has now set in. My first exam is on Thursday. The panic mainly comes from not really knowing how to study at this point. Hopefully I will know how to study for the 2nd exam, but for now, I'm just flying by the seat of my pants. I can safely say that everyone else is freaking out, too, so atleast it's not just me. I cannot wait to have this exam behind me.

Clinicals start NEXT WEEK. This is crazy and unbelievable. Are they really going to trust me with actual patients?! Yes, yes they are. But with lots of supervision, I promise. And there will be no needles involved, thank God.

1 Week Down

I know I've been MIA lately, but I was busy getting through my first week of nursing school. I made it! 1 down, many more to go! After the first week, I'm still really excited {thank goodness!} and think I've made the right decision. I've learned that there is a whole lot more to nursing than just giving medications and doing physical exams. Things I never really would have even thought of. I hope I'll be a good one.

I've also done some crocheting when I get the chance, you'll be glad to know. I am really hoping to get some mary jane slippers in the shop very soon. I've had a few custom orders though that I've been working on, which is why I haven't gotten any listed yet. Maybe I can stay this busy to help fund school. I have to admit that I had a bit of a panic attack last week, but it has thankfully passed. Going from working 40 hours a week to being a 3/4 time student and having your afternoons empty is quite a transition. Not to mention the unemployment part again. We're cutting back and will continue to do so, but it's pretty scary. Plus, I've learned just how lonely quiet afternoons can be when everyone else is working. I was made to work. I could never not work. Not just the being busy part, but the social aspect. I hate how quiet it is when I'm home alone all afternoon. It's so weird. Atleast when I was in college the first time around I was a traditional student and had friends who were around all the time. It's so much different this time around. I will probably just go to the public library and study because there's too much temptation to take a nap or do something else when I'm at home. Atleast at the library I can force myself to study. There's not much to study just yet, but I know it's coming. And I know I'll come to the point where I'm thankful for these empty afternoons, but right now it's still an adjustment.

Bittersweet Symphony

Today is my last day of work. I only have 20 minutes remaining. I should be ecstatic, but I'm not. I'm happy, and I'm looking forward to this new adventure, but I'm incredibly melancholy at leaving behind the people I have come to know so well over the past 3 years. I have made lifelong friends and some wonderful acquaintances--many of whom I will miss seeing on a daily basis. I know without a doubt that I'm making the right decision, and frankly, I have come to hate the job, but it's always hard for me to leave the people. I have learned something from each of them and will remember them always. Others I will be glad to never see again, but that comes with the territory. Several people have come by today to let me know how much they will miss me, which makes me feel great. Some of them were quite unexpected even, so you never know who you're making an impression upon. I plan to come back periodically and visit, but that's still to be determined. Even the best laid plans sometimes don't come to fruition. There are several people who I hope to keep in touch with, but even that might last. But suffice it to say that this job has molded me in more ways than one and while I'm glad to be moving on, I'm thankful that I have traveled this road.

One More Week and a New Toy

I am very pleased to announce that I am now in possession of a new (to me) embroidery machine! A family friend traded hers in last week for an upgrade, and since it is in wonderful condition, I got an upgrade myself! I haven't actually embroidered anything with it yet, but I have tried out the sewing machine function and it's, quite frankly, amazing. I thought I had a good sewing machine, but I was obviously wrong. This one is fantastic. I won't go into the details, but I feel sorta professional now. The very very exciting thing about the new embroidery machine is that I can now embroider up to 6 inches x 10 inches. With the old machine, I could only do up to 4 inches x 4 inches. This is a huge difference! The possibilities are endless! :) I will definitely keep you all updated on my new projects;)

Speaking of new projects, here is my newest: the Little Buns Diaper Changing Mat.

I thought this turned out really cute and is a great use for fabric that I really love and hate using on small projects.

In other news, I start nursing school in exactly one week. I really can't even wrap my head around the fact that I will be a full-time student again. I'm nervous and scared, but also very excited. For once in my life, I feel certain about the career path I am on. Yesterday's sermon also reinforced to me that I am doing the right thing. The sermon series our pastor started yesterday is about raising Godly children, and while I do not have children yet, it really spoke to me. Not just about how I want to raise my future children, but also about the person I want to be. The pastor stated that he thinks people have such limited goals when it comes to their lives and the lives of their children. The goal of most parents is to try to make sure that the world doesn't change their children, but a parent's goal should really be to enable their children to change the world. I thought this was an amazing message. Not only do I want my children to change the world, but I, too, am still young enough to change the world, and that is my goal. I don't feel that my current job would ever enable me to do that, but I think Nursing will. I have felt very convicted lately to step out of my box and do whatever I can to help others and show them Christ through my actions. I pray daily that I can be that type of person. It's a constant battle, but God is bigger than I am. I know He desires for others to know Him and He wants to work through me. This is an honor I will work to fulfill!

Only Wednesday?!

Is it really only Wednesday? I feel like it should be Friday already, and yet it also feels like Monday. Funny how that works.

I went yesterday and purchased my scrubs for clinicals and was pleasantly surprised with the price, which is a first when it comes to this nursing school business. Everything seems overpriced. I swear they have 40 dollared me to death. I'm also fairly certain that books for this semester alone will be close to $1,000. I now understand what my parents went through when I got my Bachelor's degree. I knew college was expensive, but I just didn't know HOW expensive. It's much more real when you pay for it yourself. Thanks, Mom and Dad! Have I mentioned how stressed I am about the student loan process, too? I'm convinced there's something I'm going to forget to do, then I'll get kicked out of school for not having filled out some pertinent paperwork. Then I'll die. Or I'll get to the bookstore and they won't be able to charge my books to my loan, then I'll have to start with no books, then I'll die. Do you see where this is going? All roads lead to death.

Have I also mentioned how psyched I am to be leaving my job? This place just gets crazier and crazier. Plus, I'm fairly certain my new boss doesn't like the way we do anything because we still do it the way the old boss wanted it done. Do you know how hard it is to completely change the way you do your job? It takes time and lots of retraining. It's not easy! Give us some slack, huh? Plus {don't tell him, but} I think the old way is better anyway. It seems like things just don't actually ever get done around here anymore. Maybe I'm just burnt out and jaded. Probably. But office morale is nearly at an all-time low since my tenure here began. It's not a healthy work environment, to say the least. But I digress...Back to nursing school!

Like I was saying, I got my scrubs for clinicals, along with my very own stethoscope and pen light. I feel like a true nursing student now! I'm pretty sure I could save lives with just these two accessories. I can't wait to get started!

I've also been working my little fingers to the bone by crocheting every free minute of the evening after work. I feel that I should be making better progress, but I am getting a bit quicker. I finally listed a custom listing for women's Mary Jane slippers in the shop, so if there's a certain color combo you want, let me know:) Otherwise, I'm still working on getting several pairs made up to put in the shop that will be ready to ship when they're ordered as many of you have requested {I'm so honored!}. This is a pair that was given away by Inner Hooker on her Facebook business page. The winner picked a great color combo--avacado and yellow.

I'm hoping I can crochet my way through nursing school since I'm quitting my job. *hint hint* So if you feel a hankering for some Mary Janes, I'll be glad to "hook" you up! Ok, I know....that was a terrible joke, but I couldn't resist;)

Not Me Monday

I did not have some unidentified bug of some sort yesterday.
And I did not finally drag my ass out of bed at 11:15 a.m. just to go straight to the couch.
And I did not lay on the couch all day long without moving except for bathroom breaks until 5 pm when I could no longer stand the fact that I had not showered yet.
And I did not head straight back to the couch the minute I got out of the shower.
I also did not finally finish a baby gift this weekend that my mom asked me for over 2 months ago. Thank goodness the baby still isn't hear yet, so I did beat that deadline atleast.
I did not have my least-favorite recurring dream last night where I am back in high school and cannot remember my locker number or my locker combination once I find my locker, and I cannot remember my class schedule or where my classes are located.
I did not wake up in a cold sweat so relieved it was just a dream.
And I would not rather be given Chinese water torture than go back to high school.

I hate thongs. Must have been invented by a man. I only wear them when I have to. But my cotton undies are SO not granny panties. Frankly, I'm offended by this question.

2. If you see a guy with his fly down, do you tell him?
Hells no. Unless it's my husband. That is way to awkward. He'll already be embarassed when he realizes it, so why should we both suffer?

3. Spanx or no Spanx?
No Spanx. I hope I never have to go there, but who knows.

4. Do you sleep in your sheets?
What? Why would I have sheets if I didn't sleep on them, or in them, or whatever? This question is weird. Yes. I sleep in my sheets...

5. What is your favorite Disney character?
I'm not 6. I don't have a favorite Disney character. I find this also to be an odd question.

6. Dream vacation spot?
Hawaii! I would love to go there on extended vacay, or live there. Really, either way.

7. What is your dream job?
Who knows. I guess right now it's nursing. But if I could do something in which I can take care of animals all day, I'd love that. Maybe working on a farm. I know, it sounds crazy, but animals are one of God's best creations in my opinion.

8. Who is your hero and why?
Jesus is my hero. He saved me. I talk to Him every day and He gets me through everything.

Take Time To...

I am always working on self-improvement. I don't use self-help books, I use the Bible. I get advice from friends. I talk to my mother. Most importantly, I pray. Today is one of those days where I'm trying to remember to be the bigger person. This is not always easy. I would definitely rather be petty and childish and just do back what is being done to me. But I won't. Today I will choose the higher road. Tomorrow, who knows? Hopefully I'll choose the same, but

I have to take it day by day.

1. If you had to choose a country to live in besides the USA (or the country you live in), which would it be?

Wow, this is really tough. I really have no idea! My first instinct is to say somewhere that is warm and sunny with beautiful beaches. I think Ireland would be pretty amazing, too. They have the most beautiful countrysides. Plus, I love Celtic things, but I'm not wearing a kilt.

2. Which would be worse, wearing flip flops in the snow or wearing gloves in the summer?

I guess flip flops in the snow. Gardeners wear gloves in the summer. And how long would I have to wear these gloves? For a perfect melancholy personality, I find these questions very difficult to answer sometimes. I really need more info...

3. Fried or Bake and why?

Fried...hello! Do you know anything that isn't better deep fried in lots of grease? I think not.

4. If you were an entertainment reporter, which celeb would you love to interview and why?

Johnny Depp, hands down. He's artistic, he's quirky, and he's super handsome. I also respect him as a fantastic actor, and not just a pretty face. {Though that face is definitely pretty.} I love that he only chooses projects that he respects. I also love that he hates the limelight and moved to France to live a quiet life with his family. They say you should never meet your idols because you would totally end up hating them. But I'd take that chance for Johnny.

5. What was your favorite book as a preteen/teenager?

That's a hard one because I have so many. I've always loved to read more than most anything. If I had to narrow it down to just one, I think it would be To Kill a Mockingbird. I also loved Island of the Blue Dolphins and Til We Have Faces.

6. List your top 3 guilty pleasure television shows.

Hannah Montana, American Idol, Glee {though I maintain that this show is quality programming}

7. What bumper sticker slogan best describes you/your attitude/your life?

"Mean people suck."

8. If you were to join a circus - what performer would you be?

I would definitely be the horse trainer. What an awesome job that would be. Except the traveling, the carnies, the creepy circus freaks, etc. Okay, maybe not such a cool job afterall.

If meddling was a sport...

Meddling: to involve oneself in a matter without right or invitation; to interfere officiously and unwantedly.

If meddling was a sport, my family would be world champions. It drives me insane. More than insane. I truly can't imagine having so much interest in someone else's problems that I felt I had to stick my nose in and know every detail. Perhaps they don't have enough going on in their own lives? Who knows, but frankly, I'm sick of it. For instance, I had quite a blow out with my father the other day. It sucked, and I hate fighting with my family for any reason, and I'm still hurting. We've both apologized and I think we can eventually move on. Yes, I'm hurting. I said it. But I think that is reasonable. But what is NOT reasonable is the fact that now I'm hurting even worse because I know the rest of my family has been talking about something that has absolutely nothing to do with them. How do I know this? Because my cousin, who lives in a completely different state texted me last night to ask me about it. Not only the fact that we had the fight, but wanted details of something that doesn't even remotely pertain to her. Now, I don't blame her, because someone obviously had to contact her and tell her about the argument for her to even know about it. That's bad enough. But then she began to ask prying questions that I do not want to answer and that would just fuel the fire for the rest of my family if I did give my true, brutally honest opinion about things. However, I chose to plead the 5th. I have so many opinions I could write a book. But would someone take those opinions, misconstrue them as something that I'm stating as "fact", and spread my words like wildfire? Hell yes, they would. This is why I can no longer discuss my feelings or troubles with family members. Yes, this is sad. Yes, it sucks that I can't confide in them. But what sucks worse is the prying and meddling--involving oneself in a matter without RIGHT or INVITATION. It is absolutely unbeliveable.

The question is, what do I do? I have asked myself this all day. It has taken all I have in me not to call and chew someone out. I know that wouldn't be the right thing to do because a) it would accomplish nothing, b) I feel that there is more than one person to blame, c) I'm trying to rid myself of drama and this would just be fueling the drama fire, and d) I don't like doing anything in anger. And right now I'm very damn angry. And when I'm angry, I say stupid shit that makes no sense and that doesn't accomplish anything. So, I will keep my mouth shut and my head down for now. I probably need time to breathe anyway. I also know that this will forever be the way my family behaves and communicates. What's hideous is that they do it under the guise of wanting to "help".

Oh, and I'm sure that this blog post will fuel some fires, too. But what the hell...

There's not much of a story behind the title. It's what I called my Etsy shop, and I really just came up with it :) I wanted the name to be something about stitching, of course, and I think the word Savvy is fun!

Why I Love Kentucky

This past weekend I finally got some much-needed nature therapy. Doesn't it always seem like all of your troubles slip away when you go outside and enjoy God's creation? It does for me. Because I live here, I often take for granted the beauty that is Western Kentucky. I somehow manage to go months on end without appreciating the surrounding nature. On Saturday, I was able to get outdoors and enjoy this amazing farm.

7 acres...Yes, 7 acres, of sunflowers. One word: Amazing.

This is my mom's boyfriend, Niki. He's possibly one of the sweetest men I've ever met, and I hope he sticks around:) He's a good fisherman, too. Caught this fish in approximately 2 minutes flat. Yea, yea, we're all very impressed! haha! No, really, I am. You should see his cast. It's like precision perfect.

Niki manages this farm, which is so cool. What a job. We get to go back this weekend. I'm super excited:)

The questions...

1. What do you look forward to the most on the 4th of July?

Hmm. This is a tough one. I think I most look forward to spending time with family, eating lots of junk food and watching fireworks. I don't get into fireworks anymore like I used to, but it's still a staple, so in that, I am a fan.

2. Are you a hugger?

I am absolutely not a hugger. I really don't like being touched at all between the hips and shoulders. This is what it boils down to, I think. I do love hugging my husband, and family who I haven't seen in awhile, but other than that, I hate it. My mom says that even as a baby I didn't like to be snuggled. How sad for her!

3. What is your favorite BBQ'd food?

Being from the South, and of the 'perfect melancholy' personality trait, I questioned what this question even means. What is BBQ'd food? Does this mean grilled? Smoked? What? When I think "BBQ'd" I think BBQ. As in pork. Because I'm from the South. BBQ is a staple here. So I'll go with BBQ. Okay, we've beat this horse long enough.

4. Do you like to watch parades?

Does anyone over the age of 7 like to watch parades? Really? Even when I was a kid, I only liked parades for the candy and the drumline.

5. Who has stinkier farts..boys or girls?

Girls don't fart. {Who wrote this question?}

6. Vampires or Werewolves?

I would have originally said vampires, but I now must say werewolves after reading and watching the Twilight series. Jacob is amazing. That's all I need to say.

7. Do you read your horoscope?

No. I don't believe in that kind of thing, though I do believe there is some truth to the astrological signs thing.

8. What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?

I really don't have a favorite, per se. I have several favorites, depending on my mood--chocolate, vanilla, anything with chocolate added, and peanut butter.

I've gotten several questions on how to do the Post-It notes on Tuesday so I thought I'd share. SupahMommy does a blog link up every Tuesday called Post-It Note Tuesday {PINT for short}.

I hate my ears. I always have. I would have them made a bit smaller. They're too big and stick out too much.

2. Do you watch Soap operas and if so what is your favorite and why?

Do reruns of Dallas count? If so, this is my favorite. I love the characters and the ridiculous things they do. Totally unrealistic, but I love it! I don't watch current soap operas. Can't stand them.

3. Favorite clothing brand?

I guess I'd have to say Old Navy.

4. An afternoon shopping spree at your favorite store or maid service for a year?

Shopping spree for sure!

Okay, I had to look this one up. After some research, I have to say heck no! But never say never, I guess.

This week my girlfriends and I got to enjoy our first book club meeting. We had so much fun! We decided to start this book club last month because we all love to read. The cool thing is that we all love to read different types of books, so we're all sort of stepping our of our reading "comfort zone," if you will. Our first book was Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer. It was a good read that I would definitely suggest to those of you who like non-fiction.

We had a great time discussing the book, drinking wine, and enjoying some girl time. We all need a girls' night out sometimes, don't we? It was really nice. We can't wait for our next meeting!

If you're looking for something fun to do with your girlfriends, I really recommend starting your own book club as well. It was such a great excuse for a relaxing night out of the house and some great bonding time. Quality time with friends truly is irreplacable.

I'm back from "staycation" {thanks for the new word, Scotti!} and back to the daily grind. Fun fun! However, my countdown to the end of this job and the start of nursing school has begun. Yay! I'm so ready. It's very surreal though. I know I've been accepted and I'm starting August 16th, but I still won't believe it until I go to class the first day. I can't seem to believe that I will be a nurse {hopefully!} in 2 years. If you had told me 5 years ago that this is the route I would be taking, I wouldn't have believed you. I always swore if there was anything I could never do, it was something in the medical field. Just goes to show how much we change as we grow.

On another note, I thought I'd share with you what I made this past week. I ordered this pattern for crochet button loafers and it was SO EASY! They turned out amazingly cute, too. I made this pair for my new nephew, Michael, in the 0-3 months size. My sister said they swallowed him but that she hopes they will fit in August.

Aren't they precious?! I love them so much that I plan to make them in a rainbow of colors and offer them in my shop. They were so much fun to make, too!

I'm an Aunt...Again!

I'm very excited to announce my newest nephew, Michael Slaten! {Slaten is his middle name, which he shares with my Papaw, his great-grandfather.}

{Yes, that's me. Don't judge. I had a long day at work and a 3 hour drive. I am not looking my best.}

Michael arrived around 6:30 last night. I rushed from work to get home and change and get to the hospital in Franklin, TN, {2.5 hours from my house} and just barely missed him arriving--by about 10 minutes. However, they tell me that the nurses cleaned him up in the room, so I didn't actually miss seeing anything, thank goodness. I don't even want to go into the stupid rush hour traffic I had to put up with.

This is my sister, Ginny, and Michael's big brother, Noah. Doesn't she look amazing? This is literally like 45 minutes after birth. I swear, she always has the easiest labor.

This is Michael's very excited cousin Brady. He turns 3 today, so they almost shared a birthday! I had to include this photo because he is so insanely cute. He loves his Spiderman costume, as you might have guessed. I can only assume that someone, at some point, told him that Michael had been in my sister's belly because several times last night he said, "I don't want Michael in my belly." It was seriously the cutest thing ever. I could just squeeze the stuffing out of him!

iPhone Insanity

As you might have read on Post It Note Tuesday, I needed a new cell phone. My 2-year contract was up and I was eligible for an upgrade. As I do when I buy anything electronic, I asked around to see what people suggest as far as brands, models, etc. I haven't been in the market for a phone for 2 years now--because I don't like to spend unnecessary money--so I needed some opinions on a good phone.

Obviously, I don't live under a rock and I know the iPhone has become the biggest thing since the moon landing. However, I don't understand why people get so obsessed with this thing. I really don't. When I started asking around about phones, approximately 4 in 5 people said, "You HAVE to get an iPhone!!!!!!!!" They were all so histrionic about it. Then they would go into all of the reasons why I HAVE TO GET AN IPHONE! I wasn't sold. Sorry, I'm not interested in entering into indentured servitude under my cell phone. Seriously. Because I've noticed that anyone who owns an iPhone is actually owned by it, as a general rule. I understand that you love your phone or whatever, but why do they have to try to talk everyone else into getting one? I talked to my SIL about it and she agreed that "iPhone users are the biggest phone snobs." She's so right.

Have you noticed how anyone who has one can't have it out of arms reach for even 2 seconds? And they're constantly texing or IMing or some other such thing. You can't even have a conversation with these people without them pulling it out and typing away mid-conversation. I think this is so rude. What if I pulled out a magazine while you were talking to me. Wouldn't you be offended? It annoys me to no end. We were at a friend's birthday party the other night and, I swear, the iPhone users were surfing the interweb or something 75% of the time we were there. Obviously, the rest of us were not interesting enough.

I mentioned on Facebook yesterday that I had gotten a new phone and my friend asked me if I got an iPhone. {One of the friends who had tried to sell me on it in the first place.} When I said, "No, I got a Samsung," I thought she was going to bleed out on the floor. She went on to say that the iPhone was "one of the best purchases {she's} ever made". Wow, seriously? Is that what this world is coming to? Because on my list of "best purchases" I would include my husband's wedding ring, our home, our vehicles. Perhaps I might even include our flat screen t.v., but I could live without it and it certainly isn't at the top of the list, by any means.

I admit, at first I did think about getting the iPhone, but then I decided that I didn't want to become more internet obsessed than I already am. Plus, I really don't need the inflated phone bill that comes with it. I can get on the internet at home. That's why I bought a computer--another one of those "best" purchases.

What are your thoughts on the iPhone?

Craft Hope Project 8

By now, we all know about the devastation caused by the Gulf Coast oil spill. Personally, I've wandered what I could do to help and have come up with nothing. Luckily for me, the wonderful people at Craft Hope are partnering with The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies to assist them in their efforts in caring for and cleaning oiled marine mammals, mostly dolphins and sea turtles. This will be Project 8.

Craft Hope's Project 8 will be collecting handmade washcloths and hand towels for use in cleaning all of the dolphins and sea turtles. These will be thrown away after a few uses, so there is absolutely no need to worry about how they look.

If you can sew, knit, or crochet, then you can do this. They are asking that you create sets of hand towels and/or wash rags to send. Preferably in sets of 10 or 20.

Since they are called "Craft Hope", they do require that they be handmade, however, several people have asked about simply cutting up old towels and t-shirts to send. They said this is okay! Also, someone mentioned not being a sewer and wanted to do the cloths where you tie the edges with knots, like you can do for the no-sew fleece blankets. Craft Hope says this is good, too! So if you're not a crafter, please don't let this stop you!

Craft Hope says this is also a great opportunity to get kids involved. It’s a wonderful way to teach them about our beaches and the fragile marine life. Perhaps they can help you cut up the fabric? It's never too early to teach them about doing what they can to help save the environment, don't you think?

The project deadline is July 3rd, so you still have plenty of time to join in! I think I will get started tonight so I can get as many sets of 10 made up as possible.

It's that time again.... Friday Confessional.

*I haven't cleaned our master bathroom in like 6 months. This is a VERY generous estimate. And by that, I mean, it might have been longer...
*I have gained 15 pounds since the hubs and I got married 2 years ago. This must be remedied.
*I confess that when I get stuck on a certain song or music video, I can watch it like 50 times in a row. After the initial obsession, I may never listen to it again.
*I confess that I don't know what "once bitten, twice shy" means. Any help here?
*Nor do I know what "tangled up in blue" means. Sounds kinda dirty.
*I hate a Pennsylvania accent. That's about the only accent that I truly cannot tolerate. Perhaps it's because the two people I've come into contact with from there were both the most extreme a-holes I've ever met.
*In two weeks I will be closer to 30 than I am to 20. I'm kind of sad about this. It's better than the alternative though!
*I confess that this is definitely my favorite baby set I've ever made! I love when something turns out great:)

*I've been meaning to write to Zuleyma {my Compassion sponsor child} all week and I still haven't done so. I wanted to try to write her every couple of weeks. I need to get on that this weekend.
*I joined www.postcrossing.com just because I love getting snail mail.

Pour Your Heart Out

Do you ever just get really tired? Tired of pretending that everything is going great? Tired of ignoring problems and thinking that will make them go away? Tired of being the strong one? I sure do, and I'm tired right now. Of all of these things.

To fill you in, my parents separated in October of last year and their divorce was final in January. When they gave me the news I was hysterical. I couldn't believe that this was happening to my family. We've always been the picture-perfect family from the outside. Sure, my parents fought, but they did it behind closed doors. Everyone fights and I never thought it was a big deal. I'm not exaggerating when I say that people who learn of the divorce for the first time are floored. They can't believe that my parents, of all people, would break up. No one is immune, obviously.

I really only have one friend that I can talk to about this stuff, because she's the only one who understands. She's been there and she's got a good head on her shoulders. She can also tell me when I'm wrong or tell me the things I don't want to hear. I actually showed up at her house one day during lunch, unexpectedly, in the pouring rain, having a good cry, and she immediately invited me in, offered grilled cheese and chocolate, and put me back together again. Now that's a good friend. I don't think she'll ever know what she's done for me. She and my husband were the only ones who got me through at the beginning. The hubs tries so hard, bless him, but he doesn't understand what I'm going through. Plus he wants to fix it rather than just listen, because he loves me so much. Sometimes I just need a listening ear and some good advice.

It has come to the stage in the divorce that my parents are dating again and I have to say that I don't think they're making the wisest choices. Does anyone? I don't know. Dad's with someone who no one approves of and who no one will accept for lots of reasons, which is hard. It's got my family in complete turmoil. He won't listen to anyone and is doing the whole "rebellious, angst-ridden teenager" thing right now, IMO. He really can't even be talked to at this point. I guess we'll just have to wait him out.

We watched "It's Complicated" last night and there's a scene where the divorced parents and the kids are eating a nice meal for a graduation celebration. It's just them and the kids, no significant others, etc. Anyway, the kids say how it's been the best day because for one day it was just them again, "the original 5". That just really got me, too, because I know I'll never have that again and it feels so tragic. I know this is a broken world because of sin and that no one is immune, but I've found this divorce to be so hard to accept since I literally grew up with my parents together. I always felt so sorry for my half-sister and half-brother {who I don't call that, but will for clarification here} because I saw what their parents divorce {our dad and their mom} did to them. It was always a struggle. But I thank God that they are also there for me now, getting me through, making me stronger, and letting me know I'm not alone.

I know they say time heals all wounds, and I believe that to be true, but I'm afraid I'll always have this sadness lurking in the far corners of my heart.

Don't you just love cute gift wrapping? I sure do. I love giving it and I love receiving it. If it's wrapped up pretty, I basically don't even care what's in the package. j/k, but really, I do love it.

I had a baby shower to go to last weekend and wanted to wrap it up all cutesie, but I hate spending $4 on a gift bag that will just get thrown in the trash. So I came up with a cute idea that is too good not to share, IMO:)

Hobby Lobby usually has their photo boxes on sale for 2 for $5.00. I knew I loved that store for a reason! So I picked up a cute, girly photo box to wrap the gift in {since the mommy is having a baby girl}, added some tissue paper and the gift, tied with a cute ribbon, and voila! Quick, cute gift wrap! Plus, she can use the photo box for all of the photos she takes when the baby arrives. The box comes with cardboard dividers, which I just left in underneath the tissue paper.

Book Club

My friends and I just started a book club. We've been wanting to do this for awhile because we all love to read and also want to be in a book club with people we actually know. Plus, we wanted a reason to get together and eat junk food, of course. Our first book was chosen by my friend Margot. She decided on Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer. It's basically about the Mount Everest disaster in 1996 where eight climbers were killed by a 'rogue storm' {as stated by wikipedia}. I'm almost halfway through and it's a pretty haunting book. Krakauer is a great writer. He makes you feel like you were actually there. Plus it's a pretty terrifying story. He was lucky to get out alive. It's also about how Everest has been commercialized so much and how these competing companies would take completely inexperienced clients up to the summit for the right price. I don't know if they still do this or not, but I guess I'll know when I'm finished? Anyway, it's a pretty interesting read so far if you like non-fiction at all.

Krakauer also wrote Into the Wild, which I've also read and was amazing. You should check it out. It's about this college student from a very well-to-do family who, out of nowhere, sells all of his possessions and decides to hitch hike to Alaska and out into the wilderness. He tells no one in his family where he is going and he ends up dying there. {This is all in the basic synopsis, so don't worry, I'm not ruining anything for you.} Crazy good book though. Also very haunting.

We don't have our next book picked out yet but we want to do it soon so we can all have time to purchase it or order it, whatever, so we can have plenty of time to finish before our second meeting. Does that sentence even make sense? Sorry if it doesn't. Anyway, we are all going to write down a book title of our choice and draw from a hat. So do you have any good ideas for me? Right now the two that come to mind are Water for Elephants and The Help, both of which I've not read. Has anyone ever read a really great book club-worthy book that you suggest? Or have you read either of these two books and recommend one over the other?

On another note, I finally finished another project last night! Aren't you proud of me? {I also have some hand cramping, but I forged through.} I've made this hat for my nephew in the child size, but this is the first adult size I've made. What do you think?

Stella wears it pretty well, I think. I'm thinking of adding a little yellow flower to the side. Thoughts? Opinions? Cheap shots?

Whimsical Wednesday

I was going to share some photos today, but blogger is NOT cooperating. GRR! What is its problem? This definitely does NOT make me whimsical. But you know what does?

*My 2 year anniversary with Mr. Savvy Stitcher this past Monday. We went to dinner on Friday night, then went to see "Robinhood". {That one's definitely a rental only.} We also had Dairy Queen ice cream cake {I was going to share a photo, but...you know...} which was delicious, as always. Then we took off work on Monday to relax and spend the day together.

*A fun weekend with friends at the Lowertown Art & Music Festival. {Also had pics available, but again...no dice} It was super duper hot outside, so we basically spend the afternoon and evening on my friend's porch. Fun!

*Last night we went to another friend's birthday party to eat pizza and play volleyball. It was the perfect night for it, which was surprising after the insanely hot day we had yesterday. Mr. Savvy Stitcher was "not allowed" to play volleyball though. He's a very bad sport and yells at anyone not playing well enough if they're on his team, including but not limited to his sweet wifey. I never said he wasn't "allowed", it just wasn't "encouraged". haha! Still, we had a great time!

Friday Confessional: 5.21.10

Today is Friday Confessional, hosted by Glamazon. This is my first Friday Confessional and if you like it, perhaps we'll do it again.

Today, I confess:

I only get uninterrupted reading time when I'm in the bathroom, so sometimes I stay in there longer than necessary {if you know what I mean} so I can have some extra quiet time or just so I can finish my chapter.
Sometimes I can look at down at my watch 5 times and still not know what time it is.
I hate "The Princess Bride". Every female friend of mine loves this movie. I don't get it. I think it's terrible. Making me watch this movie is pure torture.
I don't like wine. I feel like, as an adult, this is something I'm "supposed" to like. I always feel like a jerk when someone offers me wine and I don't accept. I'm not a prude, I just think it's not good.
I'm scared of the dark. Always have been, always will be. If I'm home alone at night, every light in the house will be on. I might even have a butcher knife nearby, just in case.
I hate diet drinks. Again, another thing I think adults are supposed to like.
I can't stand Lady Gaga. I know she's like the big "thing" right now, but I will never jump on that band wagon. I think she's a total freak show. Plus, she falls down during almost every show {so I've heard}. Maybe if she wouldn't wear the stripper shoes...
I despise housework of all kinds. I hate cooking, cleaning, laundry, all of it. I hope by the time we have a child that I will learn to like cooking, because my kid will NOT grow up on fastfood. Period.

Thursday at the couthouse is Family Court day.

The family courtroom is right next door to my office, so all day, every Thursday, there are about 57 people lining the hall waiting for their case to be called. That means that every time I need to go to the bathroom or run an errand, I have to pass through the family court gauntlet to get where I need to go. This is incredibly awkward. Everyone always stares like you're some sideshow at the circus. I always wonder, do I stare at the floor and walk really fast as if I'm on some really important, top-secret mission? Do I make eye contact and smile? I never know how to behave. You really can't win either way. I wish I could photograph the scene for you, but I think someone would notice...

There are also other fun things about Family Court. There's always the scantily clad girl who thinks that her cleavage will convince the judge to side with her. {Did no one inform you that the judge is female? Apparently not.} Today, in particular, there's a girl in a sun dress. Not really appropriate court attire, not to mention it's 50 degrees out today and storming. I'm sure you're not freezing or anything. She's also wearing so much perfume that I can smell it before I round the corner back to my office. You should never be able to smell someone before you see them.

Then, about once a month, there's a cat fight in the hall between someone's baby's mama and their new girlfriend. Very classy. Perhaps that will be today. I love breaking up the monotany.

Guess what! I've just been honored with receiving the Versatile Blogger Award! I've never received a blog award before, so yay!

With this award comes a few duties. First, I must thank Jayaycee for honoring me. We have just recently "met" in the blogosphere and she has a great blog, so check it out!

Second, I must tell you 7 things about me. Here goes:

1. I am impatient. When I want something, I want it now. I do not like to wait. But really, who does? I love instant gratification, plus I'm a bit A.D.D. I think, which is why I can only commit to crafts/hobbies that have a quick turnaround. People always ask me why I don't quilt. It's because I want the finished product now. I do not have the follow-through for year-long projects. No way.

2. When it comes to my friends and my family, I am fiercely loyal. If you mess with them, you mess with me.

3. I've never been good at making friends. I always feel like I'm not interesting enough to really want to hang out with and I usually think people don't like me. However, over the past couple of years, I have been extremely blessed to make new friendships that I feel will last a lifetime. Atleast I hope they do. I am so thankful for these ladies and I would do anything for them. I will always try to be the friend to them that I desire for myself.

4. I am an animal activist. If I could, I would live on a farm surrounded by a thousand adopted cats and dogs. I would take in any homeless animal that needed me. I would own horses and goats, too. Any kind of farm animal you could think of, really. That would be heaven!

5. Mr. Savvy Stitcher and I only want one child. We hope for a boy, but would love a girl just the same! People always give us a hard time for saying we only want one. We feel that we can do more for one than we can for two or more. Plus, that's what we want. That's our business. Why should we have more than one just because everyone else thinks you're "supposed" to? That's crazy.

6. I am 25 and my parents divorced in January. I can't even begin to explain what this is like. I know there are other "adult children" of divorce, but there are really no books out there on the subject and how to deal. Isn't that crazy? It's like young children have the monopoly on divorce or something. If you know of anything good, let me know!

7. I can't eat cold cheese. When I say cold, I mean uncooked. I eat cheese on pizza and burgers, and I love cheesesticks. But you'll never catch me eating a hunk of cold cheese. Why do people like this? That's gross. The smell is enough to make me gag, really. Why is this such a popular party food? People are all like, "Oh! Cheese and crackers!" Disgusting. I won't even eat it on my deli sandwich. If it's not melted, just keep it. I could go on all day.

Manic Monday

Okay, I know I said that I would announce the contest winner today, but there are so many good choices! I am definitely stuck between two names for two very different reasons. One, because I LOVE it, another because it references one of my favorite episodes from one of my very favorite t.v. shows. Tough choices!! So give me one more day and I'll announce tomorrow. I have to confer with Mr. Savvy Stitcher, too, because he always knows the right answer. He's always the tie breaker {unless I just completely disagree with him, then I choose, of course!}. So please forgive me for not deciding yet! Also, I woke up this morning with a severe migraine, so I couldn't very well blog, then I had court all afternoon, then my MIL's birthday dinner. Busy day! Yes, my migraine did finally go away and I was able to make it to work at noon. Thank you, Jesus! It was the worst migraine I've had in ages. I'll spare you the gory details.

Since I'm not announcing the winner today, I'll give you something fun to watch. If you were ever as obsessed with the Twilight series as I was, you will find this hysterical. If you were/are obsessed and don't find this hysterical, you may just take yourself too seriously because this is funny stuff. If you didn't read the books, you still might find it humorous. Who knows? Enjoy!

Since I'm PMS-ing and this is my blog, where I can share my thoughts and feelings {both good and bad}, I'm going to do so today, because I'm in a particularly annoyed mood. If you want an upbeat happy post today, this isn't it.

Today's List {You Know What List!}:

~People who come into my office and stare at me while I'm on the phone. Can you not see that I'm on a phone call? Didn't your mother teach you that it is rude to interrupt someone when they're on the phone? Plus, it makes me uncomfortable. But I'm sure whatever you need is way more important than my call, so carry on.

~People who can't complete an extremely simple, self-explanatory task without asking 101 questions. Seriously, I already explained everything you need to know and do. It's not brain surgery, I promise. If I didn't think you were up to the task, I would do it myself rather than trusting you to do it.

~Attorneys who ask me questions they should already know the answer to. You're the one with the law license, yet I seem to know more about legal practice than you do. This is highly unusual considering I haven't even attended law school, and I only know what I know from PAYING ATTENTION to what goes on in court. Maybe you should try it. And to think these people get paid to practice law.

~People who think their life's troubles are 10 times worse than anyone else who ever lived. Yea, they're not.

~People who use their Facebook status updates to send some passive aggressive point out into the ether, hoping that the person they're directing it to will read it and immediately know it's about them. That's just not likely. If you have something to say to them, just say it.

~Hitler. I didn't know him personally, but I don't like what he stood for. I think this is self-explanatory.

~Mean people.

Okay, that's all for now. Thank you for letting me vent today. I promise we'll be back to our regularly scheduled programming tomorrow.

7 Quick Takes Friday: May 7, 2010

1. I am finally finished with A&P II! Hooray! I think I'm finally crashing, too. I'm so tired I could hardly get out of bed this morning. But I have a wonderful weekend lined up!

2. There's a vagrant guy who wanders around the courthouse {where I work} all day every day. He's here before anyone every morning and they don't kick him out until about closing time. He has an obsession with pens. When I first started working there, he would follow the workers around randomly showing them his newest pen and he's very stingy about them. But one day, for some reason, he gives me a pen. Says, "Here, you like my new pen?" That's great, Robert! Where'd you get that? "Here, you can have it," he says. I have to say, I felt pretty special, because, like I said, he's pretty stingy with them. Then, about a month later, he gives me another pen. I try to get him to keep it, but he puts it in my purse {which is the size of a small child} before I can stop him. "Now you owe me a pen!" Oh, I see how this is going to work. So I give him a pen the next day, thinking we're even now. Oh how wrong I was. This goes on every time I see him now. He puts a pen in my purse, then tells me I owe him one. It's just his little game, it makes him happy, and it's not going to kill me to play along. But somedays, I just don't feel like it. Ugh. I hate that about myself, but he really drives me crazy some days. I know, it's terrible. I will pray for patience.

3. Target this weekend! Yessss!!!! I even have a very exciting $25 gift card from VirginHealthMiles.com. Let's see how far we can get it to go at the best shopping place EVER!

4. I have a new mannequin for modeling hats and headbands. I think I'll have a contest next week for naming her. Winner will get a crochet flower headband in their choice of colors. Yay! Come back next week to join in. Here she is showing off a simple headband:

5. I have recently been craving Dairy Queen's ice cream cake. I foresee me and the hubs treating ourselves to one for our anniversary. He'll definitely be on board.

6. We are going to a different city this weekend than originally planned. Basically because they have a way better Target and more places to eat. This means I won't be going to Joann. We decided this on Tuesday. I got a Joann coupon on the mail on Thursday. Oh, sweet irony. {Brittany, don't worry! I still want to go to C-ville! Three words: Pizza. Borders. *That other place we discussed that I can't remember the name of.*}

7. Please pray for the flood victims in Nashville, TN. The damage is devastating. My sister lives outside of Nashville and we are so thankful that she wasn't directly affected. {or is it "effected"? I can never decide.} Others were not so lucky. If you want to donate, text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10. I hate to do PSA's but they really do need help if you can afford it. Either way, please keep them in your prayers! This could have happened to any of us.

On another note, Sunday is Compassion Sunday at our church. We have set a wonderful goal {we're not saying what that goal is yet} on number of children to be sponsored. Last year, 191 children were sponsored through Compassion International from our church. All of these signed up after Compassion Sunday. 191 of these are still sponsored today. For you who don't do math, that's 100%. Just joking. But really, isn't that amazing? And these are just the ones that we know about. We're pretty sure others already sponsor a child or picked one up later. Please pray that we hit our goal again this year. I will share it with you on Monday.

I adopted "my child" last night. Her name is Zuleyma. She is 8 years old and lives in Ecuador. She is beautiful. Please pray for her as well. I hope you come back to follow along with me on my journey of sponsorship. Me and the Mr. are a bit scared of this commitment since I will not have a job come August {due to going back to school} but I know God is asking me to do this. I'm positive of it. I'm also positive that he will make it work.

Last-Minute Mother's Day DIY's

With Mother's day still 3 days away, I assume there are some who haven't picked up a gift yet. I'm usually really pushing it for some reason. Not only do we have Mother's Day in May, but my mom and my MIL both have May birthdays. Somehow, I seem to forget this EVERY YEAR! My SIL {<---she has a new blog, so show her some love} does, too, but luckily we always collaborate. I'm lucky to have a partner where that is concerned, especially since our MIL is very hard to shop for. I'm also lucky that my SIL adores shopping for gifts as much as I do! Anyway, here are some cute DIY gift ideas for Mother's Day:

Beaded Scarf:

I love this. It's so hip and funky. I might need one for myself, really. All you need is a store-bought scarf, some dangle earrings, jewelry wire and embroidery floss. I'm sure you can substitute some of these items if you're really crafty! You can find the tutorial here. Seriously, anyone can do this.

Monogrammed Tea Towel:

If you're pretty handy with stencils, check out this tutorial from MarthaStewart.com to make some monogrammed tea towels to match her kitchen.

Stamped Book Bindings:

If your mom loves to read like mine, this is a really cute idea, also from MarthaStewart.com.

Herb Garden Kit:

My mom loves to work in her garden, so I thought this was a really cute idea. I would probably get flower seeds instead of herbs though. There are a million things you can do with this. Perhaps add some gardening gloves and tools, or one of those pads you kneel on in the garden?

Do you have any boring cylinder vases around your house that need sprucing? I don't, but I think I'll have to go to Hobby Lobby and buy some. {When they're 50% off, of course.} If you do have some, you should try out these Easy Fabric Vase Covers. Such a cute way to decorate while using up some of your fabric scraps. Two birds, one stone! Oh yea!

Happy Scrappy Skirt

I love this Happy Scrappy Skirt by Little Bit Funky. If you don't follow her blog already, you should. She made this skirt last summer and now offers the pattern for $5. You can get it in her shop. Perfect for summer and for using up more scraps! I'll definitely be ordering the pattern when she reopens shop after vacation.

DIY BabyLegs

I don't have a baby, but I think these would make a great gift. You can find the tutorial here. I hear these are pretty expensive if you buy the "real" ones, and I think the DIY's are just as cute. They can also be used as arm warmers, too.

The Mr. and I went to the mall on Friday night and for some crazy reason, I decided to run into Claire's. I know, I'm too old to shop there, but it doesn't stop me from going in. Anyway, in the middle of the store was a little girl of probably 7 or 8 years old getting her ears pierced. I'm not sure the procedure had even begun yet and the little girl was crying her poor little eyes out. Now, normally I probably would have thought, "Yikes!" and moved on. But for some reason, the scene just really made me mad. Has society convinced the girl that in order for her to fit in or to be pretty she has to get her ears pierced? Did her mother drag her in? {My guess on the latter one is "no".} My assumption is that all of her friends have their ears pierced and she feels like she has to do what they do so she can fit in, or they've talked her into it because it's "un-cool to have unpierced ears!" or something to that effect. It just really frustrated me. Let me just say that I do NOT have any problem with little girls getting their ears pierced. I think I had mine done when I was about that age and I distinctly remember telling my mom I wanted it done. Of course, that was because all of my friends were doing it. So it's not the ear piercing that bothers me. Rather, it's the fact that a child of that age, who was so terrified of the pain, was willing to go through it anyway just so she would feel like she was pretty. I don't blame her parents either because my parents always told me how beautiful I was, but I just always thought, "Of course you think that, you're my mom." I am just saddened at the state of society where women have to look, act and dress a certain way to be considered "pretty." Even at such a young age. We all want to feel beautiful. That's natural. I just hate the definitions of "beauty". I wish I could be strong enough to always go my own way and to always march to the beat of my own drum, but it's extremely hard. God sees us all as beautiful, so why can't we see that for ourselves?

I know this isn't a new topic by any means, but I just wish things were different. If I ever become the mother to a little girl, I just pray that I can teach her the meaning of true beauty, and instill in her the strength I've never had.

7 Quick Takes Friday: April 30, 2010

1. My new favorite Web site is Ravelry. It's a knit & crochet community. The best part? FREE PATTERNS! Yes, they are amazing. {You have to register to get the patterns, but it's free. I promise.} I've printed these to try out this weekend. I love that crochet is no longer just for ages 70+. Don't you? {Click the photo for a link to the pattern.}

2. Big weekend plans: Me and the hubs are going out to buy an XBox. We will also be purchasing Rock Band 2. If you haven't ever played, you are seriously missing out. I mean it. We have some friends who have the game and we can play for hours on end. Best. Game. Ever. It must be an adult thing. Kids just don't get it. I actually went to my 11-year-old niece's birthday party last summer and got in an argument with an 11-year-old boy about whether or not Rock Band is better than Guitar Hero {it is}. I've never felt more adult in all of my life. Yea right!

3. I'm about 3/4 finished with Have a Little Faith by Mitch Albom. This is Albom's first non-fiction book since Tuesdays with Morrie. If you haven't read Tuesdays, I highly recommend it.

Have a Little Faith is a story about Albom being asked by his rabbi to give his eulogy. Albom,feeling vastly unworthy of such a task, begins regular visits with his rabbi in order to get to know the man better. At the same time, Albom meets a black minister who runs a homeless shelter out of a run-down church in Detroit. Through getting to know both men, Albom is taught the true meaning of faith. That's really all I can tell you, but it has really made me think about my own faith, and has touched me at the same time. Since I have experience reading his books, I know I am dangerously close to a tear-jerker ending. I can't wait to finish it tonight.

4. Compassion Sunday is next week, on Mother's Day. {Have you gotten your mom anything yet? Just a reminder!} I can't wait to pick out the Compassion child I will be sponsoring. I'll post a photo when I have one and definitely keep you updated.

5. Something has really been bothering me lately. I keep hearing comments from people in my life regarding social status and money. These people make it clear that it is unacceptable to them for one to attach themselves to someone who, in their opinion, is of a lower social class. The people who are saying these things are self-proclaimed Christians, which is what bothers me the most about it. While I am in no way saying that they are not Christians, it does bother me that you can claim Christianity so strongly, then treat another one of God's children as if you are better than them. These folks also act as if God had nothing to do with their so-called "social status". I know full well that I wouldn't have anything if it weren't for God's hand in my life. I have a very healthy fear of God and know that he could jerk away everything I have in a second if I start behaving as if my successes were self-made. I'm not saying I'm perfect by any means, and I fight sin daily. I also daily fight the urge to judge others by the way they look and I often lose that fight. I do know one thing though, I'm working on it. I also know that the phrase "trailer trash", for example, will never be heard coming from my lips.

God brings to mind the story of Esther. I'm pretty sure we all know who she is and she certainly would have been considered "low class" by today's standards. Just something to think about.

6. I finished a baby sling last night for a photography prop. It's pretty cute. I will be giving it to a local photographer who will be letting me use her photos to put the sling on Etsy. I love bartering! I'll post pics when I have some:)

7. Me, the hubs, and my sister- and brother-in-law might be taking a day trip so we can go to Target and Joann's next Saturday. I'm super excited! I know, it's sad that we have to take a "day trip" to go to the closest Target, but let's not even get into that.

...because that mean's it's almost Friday! Finally!

I don't have much to blog about today, so I'll just share a couple of things I've been working on.

I made this cute little door hanger last weekend for my sweet nephew's bedroom.

I used the "H" from this pattern and just added a ribbon to hang the letter with. From start to finish, it probably took me about 20 minutes, which was fantastic. I love quick projects!

I also FINALLY finished a crochet project. I have about 5 in progress right now, due to some sort of craft ADD or something, and I won't tell you how long this has been sitting around the house. {Note to self: One project at a time!} Anyway, it's finally done and in the shop. I'm pretty impressed with my fortitude. Aren't you?

Maybe I'll finish another project tonight, you just never know. I bought a fabric yo yo maker at Hobby Lobby today and I'm pretty excited about testing it out. {In case you don't know, the round scraps of fabric under the button on the yellow hat are fabric yo yos. I didn't know this until I learned to make them.} They are boogers to make so I'm hoping the yo yo maker will make the process a little quicker and easier because I think they're super duper cute.

What Are You Doing Wednesday

If you've been keeping up with the blog, you already know that I have recently really felt that God was telling me to use the gifts and talents he has given me to help the less fortunate. I have been ABUNDANTLY blessed in so many ways. While I'm by no means "wealthy" or "rich", my husband and I live comfortably and don't have to worry about whether or not we can pay the bills. I have also been blessed with my creative abilities. Without Him, I would have and be nothing.

So, to make a long story short, I have decided that for EVERY BABY ITEM I sell in my shop, whether it be a bib, burp cloths, crochet hat, or whatever, I will donate one of those items {bib, burp cloths, crochet hat} to Hope Unlimited {a local Christian organization that aides women with crisis pregancies} or to our church's ACTS House, which gives free clothing and homegoods to families in need in our area.

Through this, I hope I am able to bless someone in a small way, as I am blessed daily. This also means I need to get more items in my shop, which is something I always put off. I love creating but hate listing. Boo hiss. If only I had an Etsy fairy...

*Profits from my shop will still go to the child I am going to sponsor through Compassion Int'l.

Crochet Summer Hat

I made this hat last night with some purple variegated yarn that I loved. I am really pleased with the say it turned out. What do you think? Honest critiques please! I want to start adding some of these to my shop. Any advice?

I especially like this pattern in particular because it works up really quickly, plus it's made with 100% cotton, so it's breazy and breathable for summer.

The other day while browsing the internet (I never can tell you how I find certain things, I just stumble upon them) I found this site. You just enter your text and it will generate a word using Flickr photos. How cool is that? I thought it was pretty neato. If you don't like a particular letter, you just click on it to get another choice. Keep clicking until you find one you like. The only problem I find is that there are not a ton of photos to choose from and you see the same letter pretty quickly upon clicking. But it's still fun!

Also, since it's LOST Tribute Tuesday, I'm sharing a photo of me and Mr. Savvy Stitcher. These were our Halloween costumes this past year. We bought the jumpsuits and I embroidered them and added the patch. I have to say I was pretty proud of them:)

Yesterday at church we saw a video on Compassion International. In their own words, "Compassion International exists as a Christian child advocacy ministry that releases children from spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty and enables them to become responsible, fulfilled Christian adults." Next Sunday is Compassion Sunday at church and I have really felt challenged to step up and do more for those in need. I have been blessed immensely and feel God challenging me to give back some of what I have been given. Therefore, I have decided to sponsor a child through Compassion. This is going to take a great deal of faith on my part since I will be quitting my job in August to go to nursing school full time. We will be living on one salary and paying for school. I know that if this is what God requires of me, he will come through and make it happen. I will still be doing embroidery and handmade baby items, which I sell pretty frequently, but I just have to have faith that God will bring enough business my way so that I will be able to still help pay the bills and do this for Him.

That said, profits from my Etsy store from here on out will go toward my sponsorship of a Compassion International child. Please say a prayer for both my faith and for this child, whoever he/she may be.

I just ordered this design from Urban Threads. Maybe I'll actually find time this weekend to actually use it. Most likely not. Oh well.

I really need to spend my entire weekend studying for Monday's A&PII test, so there won't be much time for fun. I also have a photographer who wants me to get some crocheted hats to him for photo props. I'd obviously rather be crocheting than studying, of course. All work and no play makes Sara a dull girl.

American Idol Season 9: Top 9 Contestants (Again)

I've been religiously watching American Idol this season and can safely say there hasn't been much competing going on.

Last night was the Top 9 Contestants again, because last week the judges decided to save Big Mike. That means that 2 contestants will be voted off tonight, of which I am not a fan. Also, though I like Big Mike and don't think he should have been voted off so early, I don't think he has what it takes to win (obviously, or he wouldn't have been voted off) and I think they should have saved the "save" for someone more worthy. Oh well, I guess they didn't ask me.

Adam Lambert, from Season 8, was the mentor tonight. I really wondered about that choice, but after watching, I felt that he actually gave some really useful advice. He did, in fact, make it to the top 2 last year, so he knows what he's talking about, atleast as far as American Idol goes. He's become quite strange since American Idol ended last year, but I enjoyed seeing him again and look forward to his performance tonight on the elimination show.

OMG! I can't believe I haven't mentioned that last night was Elvis night! What am I thinking?! In case you missed this post, I've recently become quite an Elvis fan, so I was really excited to hear they would be singing Elvis songs, until I heard them, but more on that later.

Anyway, here's the recap:

1) Contestant: Crystal Bowersox
Song: Saved

Let me first say that Crystal is my favorite contestant this year. She never fails to bring a great performance. I wasn't familiar with this particular Elvis song, but she killed it. It was fantastic! Not as good as last week, in my opinion, but still fantastic. There's really not much more I can say about her. I'm fairly certain she'll win this year.

2) Contestant: Andrew Garcia
Song: Hound Dog

Wow. This was pure torture. Cue Elvis rolling over in his grave. He had like two good weeks and has consistently sucked for the past however many. Somehow, he's still riding the coat tails of his singular great performance, a reworking of Paula Abdul's Straight Up, which I'm pretty sure he only sang because for some reason he thought Paula was still on the show. Whatev. Please, put him out of my misery.

3) Contestant: Tim Urban
Song: I Can't Help Falling in Love

I can't stand this guy. Mr. Savvy Stitcher can't even watch him because he feels like he's always making eyes at him, which is so true and creepy. I was so bored with him, as I always am, that I decided I would take that time to clean out the dishwasher and listen from the kitchen instead. The song sounded fine, I guess, but you'd have to pay me to listen to it again. Ellen is always calling Tim adorable, but I strongly disagree. I think he's wildly annoying looking. I think he's trying--unsuccessfully, I might add--to channel Zac Efron. I truly think he's a few nuggets short of a Happy Meal. There's nothing going on up there.

4) Contestant: Lee Dewyze
Song: Little Less Conversation

As usual, Lee did a great job. Adam told him he needed to smile more, or something to that effect, which I agree with, sometimes. Depends on the song. Otherwise, I think he's really talented. Simon liked it, and we all know that's really the only thing that matters anyway, so it was a job well done.

5) Contestant: Aaron Kelly
Song: Blue Suede Shoes

Boooorrrring. This guy is so boring. Seriously, for like 6 weeks, everytime he came on stage, Mr. Savvy Stitcher and I were like, "Who is this?" I'm not even exaggerating. We literally never could remember him. Now we know him as the "forgettable guy". I know the teenagers have to be the only ones who like him. Plus, this week he said something to the effect of being nervous to sing this song because it mentions liquor. That's so lame.

6) Contestant: Siobhan Magnus
Song: Suspicious Minds

When they announced her song choice, I honestly thought it was a good choice. But like the last 3 weeks, she was again incredibly boring. I was really on her fan train for awhile and now I can't honestly remember why. Oh yea, because she's different and not afraid to be who she is. She also knew who she was. I think Hollywood has ruined her, as it often does. She now seems to be confused about what type of artist she is or wants to be, and she KEEPS picking these slow songs that are just snoozers. At one point, Simon told her she couldn't always end the song with her screaming high note. I sort of agreed with him, but now she's just completely lost all of her appeal. Now she's just trying to please the judges and it's not working. Simon said she lost her way 2 weeks ago, and I completely agree with him. Siobhan, please come back to us!! You were so great!

7) Contestant: Michael Lynche
Song: In the Ghetto

This is probably my least favorite Elvis song of all time. I don't get why it was so popular, but I thought Michael did a good job with it. That said, I won't be surprised when he's voted off again tonight. Again, I think the "save" was wasted. Just saying. Has Big Mike ever even been to the ghetto? Just curious.

8) Contestant: Katie Stevens
Song: Baby What Do You Want Me to Do?

One of my most favoritest Elvis songs and Katie did a great job with it. For once, I disagree with Simon, who hated it. I think Elvis would have loved her. I've read some Elvis books, so I know these things, trust me.

9) Contestant: Casey James
Song: Lawdy Miss Clawdy

I can't say I'm sure I've ever heard this song before, but Casey was great. I take back what I said to Mr. Savvy Stitcher a few weeks ago about Casey just being a pretty face. He had impressed me in the beginning, but then he went downhill. He's back with a vengeance now.

I think it will be Casey, Crystal, Lee & Siobhan in the top 4. I haven't narrowed it down any further than that yet. I see Andrew (I hope) and Big Mike going home tonight. We'll see!

I saw somewhere that Justin Gaston (I have no idea who that is) and Brooke White (former American Idol contestant) will be singing a duet of If I can dream tonight. I can't wait to hear it. Remember when Celine did the duet "with Elvis" on American Idol a few years ago? It was amazing, and that is another one of his best songs. If you missed out, here it is. Pretty cool:

7 Quick Takes Friday: April 9, 2010

1. If you haven't heard, I've been accepted to Nursing school and will start in August. I am SO unbelievably excited. I finally feel like I know what I want to do with my life. It feels good. I only pray that I am making the right decision. Anyway, Orientation is this afternoon, so I will finally get the list of things I need to do this summer to get prepared. It's hard to believe that in 4 months time I will again be a full-time student. Crazy!

2. A few weeks ago Mr. Savvy Stitcher and I went to see Crazy Heart starring Jeff Bridges, for which he won the Oscar for Best Actor. I really wasn't even interested in it but agreed to go because that's what the hubs wanted to see. (He has a man-crush on Jeff Bridges, among others.) However, I have to say it was one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. The end was great and sad and I was melancholy for the rest of the night, but I loved it. I highly recommend. I have to agree with Mr. Savvy Sticher--Jeff Bridges is pretty amazing. Maggie Gyllenhaal was really great, too. I always forget what a good actress she is. She always makes me believe that she's a real person, someone I can relate to.

3. I came across the Kind Over Matter blog yesterday, thanks to my friend Jayme. If you've never heard of it, check it out. Their motto is, "Kindness is all that matters." The blog encourages you to leave beautiful, uplifiting, handmade items for strangers to find. They focus heavily on the handmade community and "Kind Acts, Inspirational Art & Kind Projects." They also do weekly giveaways and have free printables for leaving in public places, in case you're not the creative type.

I've really been focusing on trying to do more kind things for others, as well as being someone who gives back. I really want to be a good witness for Christ and I have really felt him challenging me lately.

4. My crochet has gotten out of control. I think I have ADD. I start one project, get bored, then start another. I have several unfinished projects just lying around in my bedroom right now. I really need to get focused and finish what I start. I will work on that this week.

5. I also have a new yarn obsession. I have tons of it lying around. It used to be this way with fabric. I swear, everytime I learn something new, I hoard supplies. I can't just let myself run out before getting more. I don't even want to think about how many skeins of yarn are littering my house right now.

6. I am almost finished with A&P II. The last day is April 30th, I think. It cannot end soon enough. I dream about cat dissecting, cranial nerves, and many other disgusting things you don't even want to hear about right now. I can't wait to get out of that class. I have spent 8 months memorizing human anatomy and I'm quite sick of it. Let's move on to something else now, eh?

7. My nephew got his 1 year photos taken on Monday and I'm DYING to see them. They took him to our town's historic downtown district for the shoot and I know they'll be amazing. He even wore one of my handmade hats for some of the photos! I feel so honored! Hopefully his mommy will let me share one or two photos with you when they are posted online. I'll work on her:)

Today is TOMS 3rd Annual "One Day Without Shoes". What is it? Simply put, it's a day without shoes.

Now you're probably thinking, "Why would a SHOE COMPANY encourage folks to go BAREFOOT?" Easy. TOMS is not just a shoe company; TOMS is a movement, an advocate for change. They want to raise awareness for the MILLIONS of children around the world who go every day without the luxury of something as simple as shoes.

Today, TOMS is asking people to go the day, part of the day or even just a few minutes, barefoot, to experience a life without shoes firsthand, and to help spread awareness of the impact a simple pair of shoes can bring to a child's life.

Why Shoes?

Fact #1: In some developing nations, many children must walk for miles to school, clean water, and to seek medical help.

Fact #2: Cuts and sores on feet can lead to infection.

Fact #3: Often, children cannot attend school barefoot--it's against school rules.

Fact #4: In Ethiopia, approximately one million people are suffering from Podoconiosis, a debilitating and disfiguring disease caused by walking barefoot in volcanic soil.

Fact #5: Podoconiosis is 100% preventable with basic foot hygiene and wearing shoes.

Today, April 8th, is a day of recognition, of awareness, for those children who are hindered on a daily basis because they do not have something as simple as a pair of shoes. Get involved in something bigger than yourself. I'm going barefoot on April 8th. (After I get off of work, of course.) Will you?

You may ask, "In what other ways can I help?" Personally, I just bought my first pair of TOMS shoes. For EVERY PAIR of shoes sold, TOMS gives one pair of new shoes to a child in need. This is huge. The pair I bought were only $44, and the reviews are spectacular. Here they are:

Everyone who buys a pair says they are the most comfortable shoes they've ever worn. Plus, they're pretty cute, to boot! I don't know about you, but I feel pretty good buying from a company who gives back. No, I do not work for TOMS, nor do I know anyone who does, but I saw this on the Today Show this morning and wanted to read more about it. What I learned moved me and I hope it moves you, too.

My Redeemer Lives

His limits know no bounds. Yesterday, at church, it was through the song My Redeemer Lives by Nicole C. Mullen, that I was touched, and I wanted to share it with you today. LOST Tribute Tuesday

Because LOST is the best show ever created, and because it is in its final season, I will be honoring this amazing show every Tuesday until its over.

I have dedicated 6 years to this show. I have spent 6 years with these characters. I feel like they are my family. You may that is utterly ridiculous, but if you don't watch the show, then you can't possibly understand. There is a 99.999% chance that I will go into deep mourning the day after the series finale. I cannot put into words how obsessed I am with this show. Atleast it will go out with a bang.

Today's tribute is to Sawyer, my favorite character. For a long time it was a toss-up between him and Ben Linus, but I have to be true to myself and admit that Sawyer will always have my heart. Here's to you, Sawyer. (Click the link to see the video because the stupid thing won't embed.)

7 Quick Takes Friday

I'm new to 7 Quick Takes Friday. Here goes:

1. I'm currently reading Bed Rest by Sarah Bilston. It's quite funny. I read an excerpt to Mr. Savvy Stitcher the other day that I thought was particularly funny and he said, "And why exactly are you reading this?" Like he thought I was putting myself through undue torture or something because I might at some unknown point in the distant future, have to be put on bed rest. Because I do plan to have a child someday. And like he thought I was jinxing myself or something. I said, "Because it's funny. Duh." He didn't think it was amusing. There's something about men--they are unable to see the humor in chick lit. Oh well.

If you haven't read this book, you should check it out.

2. I saw the movie trailer for The Last Song for the millionth time last night. I immediately gasped and threw my hand over my heart in pure, excrutiating joy, and exclaimed, "I can't wait to see that! That book was so great!" Mr. Savvy Stitcher was not amused. Again. "You say that every time that comes on. I hope you don't end up being disappointed like last time," he says, referring to the last Nicholas Sparks book-turned-movie I saw, Nights in Rodanthe, which was terrible. "I won't. The previews are too good for it to be bad, and the book was great!" He just rolled his eyes, of course. So if I hate it, I'll never admit it to him. Plus, Miley Cyrus is a guilty pleasure for me. I love her. It's ridiculous. Don't judge me.

3. Speaking of Mr. Savvy Stitcher, we started dating 5 years ago today. After our first date, we came back to my house and watched Something's Gotta Give with Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton. If you are female and you haven't seen it, you are missing out. Mr. Savvy Stitcher actually enjoyed it, too. Maybe I'll make him watch it tonight...

Gosh, I'm really full of recommendations today.

4. I made this hat last night. It feels a little big on my head. Do you think I have a small head? Or is it supposed to be this big? I don't know. I'll try again tomorrow.

5. For some reason, something just reminded me of the last laugh-out-loud-funny book I read, Little Stalker, by Jennifer Belle. It's extremely quirky, and the main character may or may not have some sort of mental illness. But funny kind, not the kind that may or may not cause one to become an axe murderer (or is it ax murderer?) If you are easily offended, don't read it. That's my disclaimer.

6. I plan to crochet headbands and hats all weekend when not studying for Monday's Anatomy & Physiology test. That probably means I'll get one headband done, then not even be able to get it photographed for Etsy. That seems to be my modus operandi. Wish me luck.

If you can't tell, I've gotten really into the crochet lately. Here's a headband I whipped up the other night (please excuse the hair):

It was really simple, yet satisfying. I'm going to add this one to my shop. Or maybe I'll keep it for myself. What other colors would you like to see? I think this is great for spring! Can also be made in a smaller size for babies or kids.

I also made some keyfobs a couple of weeks ago for some friends which I've finally taken the time to upload, though the pics aren't the greatest.

I bought the materials for these before Christmas planning to make a bunch as presents, bI ut kept putting it off because I thought it was going to be a lot of work. Little did I know how easy they would turn out to be! The embroidery machine gave me a few fits, but I think I have it down now. So if you have a birthday coming up, just expect to get one of these from me.

Also, here's a cute bib for my adorable nephew, and of course, just another reason to show off cute pictures of him.

Hope you enjoy watching him grow because he's my favorite guinea pig. It also helps that his mom, my sister-in-law, always goes on and on about the stuff I make him and shows it off to all her friends. It's a good ego boost;)

And in other news, I have been accepted into nursing school! It's a 2 year RN program and I will start in the Fall. So don't feel too guilty if you want to help my college fund and shop here :)

I'm baaaaack! My friend Jayme has been giving me a hard time about not blogging anymore, and I really have no excuse, except that I hate taking pictures of my projects. I love doing them, and want to even put some on Etsy, but I have a confession...I'm lazy. Atleast when it comes to taking pictures, uploading, doing descriptions, etc. ect. So, this one's for you, Jayme:)

Anyway, here's what I've been up to lately:

I finally learned to crochet, and made this fun little hat for my nephew. I hope to put some in my Etsy store soon. *Pattern from Nutella Dreams Late Night Crafts.

I also ordered a bunch of these elephants and am embroidering them for baby gifts. (Also comes in pink).

And for my newest crochet project, I made my nephew a monkey hat for his upcoming 1st birthday party, which is going to be (of course) a monkey theme. He's precious, I know!

Learning to Crochet

I haven't told you this yet, but I'm trying to learn how to crochet. I just ordered a pattern from Etsy yesterday for a hat and really hope I can get it down. I think it would make some great Christmas gifts for my really sweet niece and nephews! (Shhh! Don't tell them!) Anyway, I hope I can master the art of crochet after seeing this blanket by Jill of Homemade by Jill. How precious is this?! I absolutely love it. She is just way too talented.

I was quite busy this weekend with some special orders for friends an family.

Presenting my first ever taggy blanket!

I made it for my 6-month-old nephew and he loved it! It got lots of chewing over the weekend. I embroidered his name on it, but quickly realized I should have used the bright green thread instead because you can't really see his name at all. Oh well. Here's a close-up.

I found this fabric alphabet tutorial the other day on Happy Together and had to share! I was so excited for a new idea for a toddler gift and will definitely be making some of these for my nephew for Christmas this year. He will be 2 1/2 so I think he will be the perfect age for these. I may even try to make him some numbers, too. This is also the perfect way to use up some fabric scraps that I just can't make myself throw away--and now I'm glad I didn't!
