iPhone Insanity

As you might have read on Post It Note Tuesday, I needed a new cell phone. My 2-year contract was up and I was eligible for an upgrade. As I do when I buy anything electronic, I asked around to see what people suggest as far as brands, models, etc. I haven't been in the market for a phone for 2 years now--because I don't like to spend unnecessary money--so I needed some opinions on a good phone.

Obviously, I don't live under a rock and I know the iPhone has become the biggest thing since the moon landing. However, I don't understand why people get so obsessed with this thing. I really don't. When I started asking around about phones, approximately 4 in 5 people said, "You HAVE to get an iPhone!!!!!!!!" They were all so histrionic about it. Then they would go into all of the reasons why I HAVE TO GET AN IPHONE! I wasn't sold. Sorry, I'm not interested in entering into indentured servitude under my cell phone. Seriously. Because I've noticed that anyone who owns an iPhone is actually owned by it, as a general rule. I understand that you love your phone or whatever, but why do they have to try to talk everyone else into getting one? I talked to my SIL about it and she agreed that "iPhone users are the biggest phone snobs." She's so right.

Have you noticed how anyone who has one can't have it out of arms reach for even 2 seconds? And they're constantly texing or IMing or some other such thing. You can't even have a conversation with these people without them pulling it out and typing away mid-conversation. I think this is so rude. What if I pulled out a magazine while you were talking to me. Wouldn't you be offended? It annoys me to no end. We were at a friend's birthday party the other night and, I swear, the iPhone users were surfing the interweb or something 75% of the time we were there. Obviously, the rest of us were not interesting enough.

I mentioned on Facebook yesterday that I had gotten a new phone and my friend asked me if I got an iPhone. {One of the friends who had tried to sell me on it in the first place.} When I said, "No, I got a Samsung," I thought she was going to bleed out on the floor. She went on to say that the iPhone was "one of the best purchases {she's} ever made". Wow, seriously? Is that what this world is coming to? Because on my list of "best purchases" I would include my husband's wedding ring, our home, our vehicles. Perhaps I might even include our flat screen t.v., but I could live without it and it certainly isn't at the top of the list, by any means.

I admit, at first I did think about getting the iPhone, but then I decided that I didn't want to become more internet obsessed than I already am. Plus, I really don't need the inflated phone bill that comes with it. I can get on the internet at home. That's why I bought a computer--another one of those "best" purchases.

What are your thoughts on the iPhone?

haha! Sounds familiar...

  1. Agree. Not to mention the cost! It's expensive each month. No thank you! And the reception sucks. I'll stick with my LG Dare from Verizon. I have internet access but it's not quick and userfriendly like the iPhone so I don't use it 24 hours a day.

    Good job standing your ground!

  2. I don't get the Iphone thing either. ya it looks like a lot of fun, but the added charges & sketchy service (not to mention the touch screen) just ruin it for us. We are happy with our Sprint Blackberry's - & even if Sprint offered the iphone, we probably wouldn't get it!

  3. oh, I forgot to add that my blackberry is an OLDER version - no camera! I got it because I like a bigger phone, so I guess I am out of the loop too haha!

  4. I want the iphone... but don't want to pay the $30 fee/month. so I got a texting phone and am going to get an itouch... everything the iphone does, minus the calling and no $30 fee

  5. I played with my cousin's iPhone recently and had a brief moment of phone envy...but I honestly think I would HATE the touch screen. I have a Blackberry and the internet part of the plan has come in handy because of all the traveling we do now, gives me something to do on trips :)

  6. I own an iPhone and I love it. When they first came out I didn't think it was that big of a deal until my husband got one, then I played on it, and I fell in love. lol ;) I use my iPhone not only for calling (which I don't have any problem with reception) and texting but my email, notes, GPS, games, FB, Twitter, Myspace, daily devotion and Bible, music (which includes apps to my favorite radio station that we do not have in my town), I log my exercise on it plus I have an app that keeps up with my 5K training and the list could go on and on and on. I love how if there is something I want to "google" that I don't have to be at home and I don't have to get out the laptop and load it but instead pick up my phone. Another thing is that when I purchase a phone or anything electronic I will splurge and choose a higher quality item b/c I know I'm rough on electronics and I want it to last. My iPhone has held up the best of all previous phones I have purchased. I am nearing the end of my contract and will be renewing in September with an upgrade to yes, the iPhone4 and my current iPhone is still in excellent running condition, the quality of my phone has exceeded my expectations and that is one of the main reasons I will continue to be an iPhone user. :)

  7. I have a Samsung Moment, which I really do love. I was probably on it way too much the first month or two after I got it (for Christmas). But the newness has worn off and I just appreciate having it handy when I need it. Like looking up directions on the net when I was riding to a far away scrapbooking store with my daughter on Saturday. She was driving, I was navigating. And my one vice is playing the Word Mix Lite game that I downloaded thru the apps.
